Released for Xbox in , it introduced matchmaking, a revolution in online who could provide the necessary challenge which would help hone their skills. Introduced on Halo 3, the ability to record gameplay straight onto the Xbox of symmetrical and non-symmetrical maps across most of the series.

I can’t quite say this is the one I’ve been waiting for —that’s Halo 3—but Halo 2 joined the Master Chief Collection on PC Tuesday night, and it’s an ideal place to start really devoting time to Halo’s online multiplayer. It’s still fun, but not a game I’d dump hours of time into. Halo 2, even after 15 years, feels just deep enough. It’s still the kind of multiplayer game that can demands precision aiming, tight teamwork, and intricate map knowledge to master.

Alternate keybinds are coming in a future update, and the developers are continuing to work on issues around screen tearing, which I ran into while testing Halo 2’s campaign. Halo Reach’s audio issues remain, and are taking a long time to fix. Halo 2 doesn’t exhibit identical problems, though its audio isn’t perfect, either. I tested Halo 2 on a low-end system with a GTX Ti graphics card still roughly twice as powerful as the minimum spec stated on Steam , while hardware writer Jorge Jimenez tested on a much more powerful rig, with an RTX Super.

On my system, even with the framerate limited to 60 fps, VSync on, and trying fullscreen and borderless windowed, I saw screen tearing that proved distracting. I got the same result on the “Unlimited” fps option I really want to see the developers add a fps lock in the future but did notice less tearing when I turned the settings down to best performance rather than Enhanced.

It’s worth noting that I experienced the same tearing in Halo Reach, which is actually a less demanding game than Halo 2 Anniversary, even when playing on a GTX

XCN : Back in the infancy of the original Halo, what were your hopes for the series? Frank O’Connor : Halo actually started its life as a real-time strategy game for the Macintosh, but the guys here at Bungie had so many story ideas that eventually it grew out of that genre and into a first-person shooter. It also grew out of the Macintosh and into the PC, then initially it was an Xbox-exclusive title. It went through a lot of evolution and it sounds quite drastic, but actually it was a very smooth process.

As it became more fun to use the vehicles and the physics that the guys had created it became obvious it should be an action game rather than an RTS. Luckily it ended up being the game we all know and love today! XCN : Has the series surpassed your expectations? Frank O’Connor : The success and the expansion of the halo universe is certainly something that caught Bungie a little by surprise. We’re always ready for these things but the fact that we now have a range of action figures, a Marvel comic book, toys, games, New York Times best-selling novels and best-selling original soundtracks is always surprising.

I don’t think Jason Jones could have predicted that back when Bungie first started. But it’s an absolute pleasure to see the universe that we love expand and be so fondly embraced by the fans in the community. How are you going to continue to support this game in the future? Frank O’Connor : Halo 2 continues to be one of the most popular games on Xbox Live and my personal prediction is that we’ll take over from Gears of War again eventually, even if only for a short spell. I think one of the reasons for the continued popularity of Halo 2 on Xbox Live is our matchmaking.

It held that position for almost two years, and you can make a decent argument that the primary reason Xbox Live survived its infancy was the massive popularity of this single title.

The development team at Bungie took a bold risk in building a new type of online experience, and it was a massive success and made millions of people happy. At the time, most researchers at Microsoft supported three to five titles each, but because this was a major tentpole title for the original Xbox, there were two user experience researchers assigned to help with the game full-time, myself and Randy Pagulayan.

Our job was to use qualitative and quantitative techniques like usability studies, playtests, and surveys to give design teams insights into how their games would be received after they were released. This is a story about a time when I failed to be a good prophet, where my attempts to project research data into the future led to a conflict between the research team at Microsoft and the design team at Bungie.

Usually, public discussions about games user research focus on the times we were right, the times when data fixed game design. This story is one of the other times, when two otherwise competent researchers drew the wrong conclusions about an innovative piece of game design and made bad recommendations, and how the game succeeded in spite of that. Instead, the default solution to finding other people to play with online was to use lobbies.
